Toronto’s independent publisher Alternate History Comics has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a new publication: The Jewish Comix Anthology: Volume 1, a 252 page hardcover book that contains artwork and stories from some of comic book’s biggest creators including Will Eisner, Robert Crumb, Harvey Pekar and the ‘father-of-the-graphic-novel’ Art Spiegelman.
This Anthology will also bring in 27 additional artists to create never-before-seen comic book/graphic novel adaptations of stories from Jewish history, culture and folklore.
In total there will 47 individual creators involved in the project from Canada, the United States, Israel and the UK.
“It is an amazing honour to have this opportunity to create something of such significance. As a publisher, illustrator and someone of Jewish heritage myself I was immediately excited when this project came along and there was no way I could pass this up!”, exclaimed Andy Stanleigh, Director and Chief Visual Engineer for AH Comics.
The Anthology is actually the brain-child of Steven M. Bergson, MLIS who is a Research Administrator at UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, Past President of the Association of Jewish Libraries (Ontario Chapter), a seasoned blogger and an expert on the representation of Jews in comic books, comic strips, and graphic novels. Steven will be serving as Editor for the Anthology with AH Comics publishing.
“This publication is almost 10 years in the making, including choosing and editing content, organizing 47 individual creators, contracts and schedules. We, AH Comics and Editor Steven M. Bergson are more than proud to finally launch the fundraising campaign on Kickstarter to bring this historic project to life.”
Since the campaign launched on February 3rd, 2014, it has raised over $6,000 of its $50,000 goal. With the fundraising campaign ending on March 3rd, 2014, AH Comics is hoping to surpass their goal amount and add some special content and bring more exposure to the Jewish Comix Anthology: Volume 1.
There is a large following of the project from all over the globe, and AH Comics is hoping to see the momentum build into what may be one of the most unique and culturally significant publications of our time.
