THE FLAT is Israel’s top-grossing documentary of the year.  It won the Israeli Academy Award (Ofir) for Best Documentary, as well as Best Director at the Jerusalem Film Festival.

After his grandmother passes away at age 98, Israeli documentarian Arnon Goldfinger discovers an unexpected link to WWI-era Germany in her untouched Tel Aviv apartment. Compelled to delve further into his family history, Goldfinger pieces together her letters and newspaper clippings to reveal startling facts and frustrating ambiguities in the life of a woman glimpsed only in oil paintings and faded photographs. A multifaceted examination of a time period so often represented in stark black and white, THE FLAT tackles the endlessly fraught relationship between Germans and Jews, and the fundamentally mysterious nature of personal history.

‘The Flat’ had its world premiere at the Jerusalem International Film Festival in 2011, where it won for Best Director of a Documentary, and its North American premiere at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, where it was awarded for Best Editing. The film, which is Israel’s top-grossing documentary of the year, was also winner of the Israeli Academy Award (the Ophir) for Best Documentary, the Best Documentary at the Bavarian Film Awards and winner of Best Film and Best Director at the Israeli Documentary Filmmakers Forum.

Arnon Goldfinger is the winner of two Israeli Academy Awards. He has been working as a director, scriptwriter, and producer since 1992. His previous documentary feature THE KOMEDIANT won numerous awards and was released theatrically in Israel and the United States in 2002.

The Flat coming American release 19.10.12.
