by Abhijit Thite and translated by Priya Gokhale

This book is a tribute to legendary Irena Sendler. During the second world war Poland once again came under foreign rule. Russia and Germany between them bit off chunks of Poland. The Nazi armies marched into Poland, and a spate of destruction was unleashed. Jews began to be massacred. Hundreds of thousands of Jews were confined in the Warsaw ghettos. Thousands of Jews were facing atrocities in the torture chambers in Poland. Children were abducted for being subjected to horrifying scientific tests.
The clouds of darkness made one wonder if the dawn would ever break. A ray of light pierced the darkness, giving solace to all. Her name was Irena Sendler. Irena showed the courage to stand up against Nazi atrocities with scant regard for self and family. At times she stood at death’s door, but she did not back down on her humanitarian work. She saved as many Jews as she humanly could. She sneaked secretly into the heavily guarded ghettos of Warsaw and rescued around 2,500 children, and then hid them in safety till the end of the War.
