I have set HaShem before me always; for surely He is at my right hand – I will not be moved. Therefore my heart rejoiced and my soul exalted; even my body will dwell in safety.”

King David revealed a great secret concerning the attainment of happiness and security. Even more, his happiness was not superficial or temporary. Rather, his happiness filled his entire mind and soul, i.e., Therefore my heart rejoiced and my soul exalted; and his security was manifest as absolute protection; i.e., my body will dwell in safety.

What was the wondrous method that brought King David such a deep measure of joy and protection?

He focused on one single goal: I have set HaShem before me always. He directed his thoughts to think always of HaShem. He persisted in this until he connected his very heart and soul to the Eternal Goodness of HaShem. Ultimately, the light of the Divine Presence illuminated his being with holiness and surrounded him with protection.

Through attaching his every thought to HaShem, King David attached himself to the Highest Power. Closeness to HaShem is the supreme delight and pleasure. What’s more, the presence of HaShem emanates compassion, forgiveness, and blessing. Therefore by reflecting on HaShem, the Merciful Creator, boundless joy permeated his being.

In addition, by uplifting himself to the realm of the Divine Splendor he entered under the wings of Heavenly protection. As a result, he was safeguarded from all calamities and his soul was forever at peace.

May we always “Place HaShem before us” so that our souls scintillate with joy and we dwell securely upon the earth (based on the commentary of the Even Ezra to Tehillim).

Today: Imagine the joy of knowing the presence of HaShem filling your heart and soul.
